More Than a Bull - A Father-Son Quest for Tank

This is a hunt I’ll never forget—and a memory my boys and I will hold onto for the rest of our lives.

That morning started fast—we located elk right away, one of which the boys nicknamed “IHOP” because of a noticeable limp. With excitement high, we put a plan together and began working to close the distance. But just as things were starting to come together, another group of hunters came in from below and pushed the elk out of the area.

Instead of backing off, we decided to press on.

We packed in deeper and eventually relocated the herd. This time, there were two more bulls, and the boys quickly gave them names—“Tank” and “Frank.” By the time we got into position, we had already covered nine miles—no small feat for a 4-year-old and an 11-year-old. But they never once slowed down.

As the boys ran the camera, I made a move on Tank. My first shot missed—but the second arrow hit home. He didn’t go far, only about 50 yards before piling up. We set up camp, made dinner, and waited for nightfall before hiking down to recover him. Under the stars, we celebrated together—then got to work breaking him down and started the pack-out.

It was one of the most meaningful hunts I’ve ever experienced. We walked a lot, worked hard, and pushed ourselves—but more than anything, we shared something special that I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life. The big bull we brought home was just the cherry on top—the real trophy was the time, effort, and memories made alongside my boys.

This is what Adventure Off Script is all about—real moments, family-driven adventure, and the stories that unfold when you chase something more than just the hunt.

FILMMAKER BIO

At the heart of Adventure Off Script is something simple but powerful—a dad chasing adventure with his two boys. For filmmaker Zach Herold, it’s not just about the hunt—it’s about the moments shared along the way, the lessons passed down in the backcountry, and the stories that come from time spent together in wild places.

Adventure Off Script was born from those experiences—real-life adventures, raw and honest storytelling, and a deep love for the outdoors. What started as a way to document family hunts has grown into a media company producing hunting films, gear reviews, how-to content, and stories that inspire others to get outside and make their own memories.

Zach’s work reflects his belief that the outdoors is more than just a destination—it’s where bonds are built, values are passed on, and life slows down just enough to appreciate what really matters.
A gentle breeze, the crunch of leaves under my boots, and the excitement in my boy’s voice as they experience mother nature. These are the moments in life I cherish and believe that the outdoors plays an integral part in lessons of resilience, respect, and situations that can humble any man.

But my passion doesn't stop at personal experiences. I strive to connect others to the outdoors with my YouTube Channel “Adventure Off Script” sharing not just tales of adventure but gear reviews, tips, tactics, and more. Through this mission, I hope to educate and inspire others to step outside, explore, and find their own connections in the vast, wild world.
